Inquest into death of Sudbury charity shop volunteer, 68

An inquest into the death of a Sudbury woman found dead in a river near her home has been opened.

Shirley Cassman, from Melford Road, was found in the river in Brundon Lane on December 13 following a police search.

The 68-year-old had been missing for two days after last being seen at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

Mrs Cassman had been working as a charity volunteer at the RSPCA shop in Sudbury’s Borehamgate Precinct until a few weeks before her death.

Her only son, Jason Watt, said his mother suffered from depression and deep anxiety. He had travelled from his home in Wiltshire to help efforts to find her.

An initial inquest into Mrs Cassman’s death was opened and adjoined in Bury St Edmunds on Thursday. A full hearing will be held at a later date.
