Homes plan gets the go ahead
An application to build 77 new homes on a former coal yard off Rodbridge Hill, near Long Melford, got the go ahead from councillors yesterday.
Southsea Properties applied for outline planning permission for the homes, a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, and three and four-bedroom houses.
The site covers four-and-a-half acres and was recommended for approval by Babergh District Council subject to a section 106 agreement - money given by developers to the council to reduce the impact of the development.
The plans are also subject to the completion of a legal agreement and subject to no objections being received from the Environment Agency and Suffolk County Council in respect of the drainage details. Long Melford Parish Council said it did not object to the plan, but it said the development would require pedestrian-only access to Theobalds Close.
Parish councillors wanted 35 per cent of the homes to be available for rent to villagers - which equates to 27 out of the 77 new homes.
The council also called for a footway and cycle link to be built to connect with Station Road and a pedestrian crossing in Station Road to encourage a safer route between the new estate and Long Melford Primary School.
Parish councillors have also asked for £3,000 from the developers towards speed activated signs and poles to encourage drivers to adhere to the speed limit near the site, £3,000 towards litter and dog waste bins and a £10,000 contribution towards improvements at Melford Country Park.
In a report, councillors were told that six people had objected to the application citing the development was isolated from Long Melford and was not sustainable because of poor access to facilities and services.
One objector said that more than 50 per cent of the site was greenfield which provides food and nesting sites for a wide range of birds and wildlife.
But Babergh officers said it was considered a sustainable development and recommended it for approval.
