Help may have saved my life

Earlier this month, I had minor surgery to remove lumps in my cervix.

Although I’m still awaiting for my results, I would like to place on record my appreciation for the 111 service.

I dialed 111 at about 8pm in a lot of pain from the minor operation I’d had the previous day. I was asked some questions, then passed straight to a clinician who advised me it was a matter a doctor would have to deal with.

I was given the normal two-hour call back window, but, to my surprise, 20 minutes later I had a call back.

I was asked if I could make it to the new health centre in Sudbury. After explaining that I was finding it hard to walk, they agreed to send a doctor to me, but that it would be at least four hours before anyone could get to me.

Again, I was surprised when I got a call within 30 minutes saying the doctor was on his way. He came in and checked me over and prescribed me some strong antibiotics and painkillers.

Some days later, I received a call from my GP surgery as I had attended an appointment there previously and had been given a low dose of antibiotics.

I was told an infection had been found and the antibiotics given to me would have had no effect. To my relief, I was told I didn’t need to go hospital as the antibiotics prescribed by the out-of-hours doctor were effective.

I want people to know 111 isn’t all bad and, in fact, it may have saved my life and definitely saved me a hospital stay.

Like all services, it has its faults, but I believe this is beyond its control and it has to prioritise cases for home treatment.
