Halstead nurse faces hearing over care home fall claims

A nurse at a Halstead care home will face a disciplinary hearing next week over claims she lied about a patient suffering a fall to a relative.

Paula Burgin is charged with failing to seek medical advice after a resident suffered a fall on August 28, 2011, at Attwood’s Manor Care Home in Braintree Road, where Mrs Burgin was working as a registered mental health nurse.

She is also accused of dishonestly telling a relative that the resident had not suffered any injuries.

Mrs Burgin will appear before a Nursing and Midwifery Council panel in London on Monday and a decision is expected on Wednesday.

Anthony Edge, general manager of Attwood’s Manor, said: “There was an incident of a resident falling on August 28. The registered nurse in charge failed to get medical treatment for the resident at the time of the incident.

“The manager, when coming on duty, saw the delay in obtaining treatment and urgent treatment was sought.”

Mr Edge said safeguarding concerns were raised and Mrs Burgin was suspended pending a full investigation by the home and Essex County Council, which resulted in her being dismissed.

“Management reported the case to the Nursing and Midwifery Council,” said Mr Edge. “The management of Attwood’s Manor are fully co-operating with the NMC.”
