MATT Cardle may not have scaled the dizzying heights of the top of the UK singles chart, but he still has plenty to be pleased about, according to his dad.
Last year’s X Factor winner, who comes from Little Maplestead, saw his second single, Run For Your Life, reach number six in Sunday’s official singles chart, five places below the position achieved by his debut single When We Collide in December.
But for his dad David Cardle, a top 10 single is still a magnificent achievement.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Mr Cardle. “There seems to be an opinion that if you don’t have a number one, it’s a flop.
“He has gone in at number six and if you had told him 12 months ago that he’d have a number one and the second single at number six, he would’ve been over the moon.”
Mr Cardle, who lives in Little Maplestead with his wife Jenny, said his son’s critics should look at the bigger picture when evaluating his success.
“In 10 months, he has won the X Factor, done the X Factor tour, had a number one and co-written the album,” he said
Run For Your Life, which was written by Gary Barlow, was beaten to top spot by last week’s number one, We Found Love by Rihanna.
His debut album Letters was released on Monday, and looks set for another tough battle to emulate the nine previous X Factor contestants to have had number one albums.
