Dozens of shopping baskets at a supermarket in Hadleigh have been fitted with security tags – after more than 100 were stolen by shoppers.

It is understood that Morrisons in Calais Street had almost 150 baskets a few months back, before this number dwindled to just 23.

Staff were left dumbfounded as to why the baskets had been stolen.

The shopping baskets have since been replenished and fitted with security tags, which are designed to activate an alarm should they be taken out of the store.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Many of the store’s hand baskets had gone missing.

“We now have plenty for all our shoppers, including new ones with security tags to help ensure they stay in the store,” the spokesman added.
