Greene King beats its Macmillan target by £600,000
Greene King has beaten its £1 million fundraising target for Macmillan Cancer Support and raised £1.6million over the past three years.
Employees across the whole company raise funds for Macmillan, which was Bury St Edmunds based Greene King’s first national charity partner.
The business’ Locals division has just had its annual ‘Macmillan May’ challenge, aiming to beat last year’s total of £118,000.
During May, Locals’ pubs hosted family fun days, organised rock-and-roll bingo nights, sponsored walks and bike rides and sold raffle tickets to raise money.
Hungry Horse staff and customers have just raised more than £25,000 during a recent ‘Macmillan Week’.
Rooney Anand, Greene King chief executive, said: “I am immensely proud of our team and our customers who have gone above and beyond what we had thought possible to raise £1.6million for Macmillan.
“Every one of us is touched in some way by cancer and hopefully we have done our bit to help Macmillan provide support to those people affected.”
Simon Phillips, Macmillan Cancer Support’s director of fundraising, added: “Congratulations to everyone at Greene King who has been involved in raising this absolutely fantastic sum of money for Macmillan.
“To exceed a fundraising target by £600,000 is incredibly impressive and is testament to the efforts of a brilliant and dedicated team.
“The money you have raised will help fund vital Macmillan services which enable us to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. Thank you.”
Partnership successes over the last three years have included; 160 Greene King employees joining together to take on a Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge raising almost £80,000, donations on selected desserts from Greene King menus raising over £150,000, and individuals taking part in their own personal challenges and fundraising events.
Greene King has also made a £30,000 donation to the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre Appeal, which will help fund a brand new cancer treatment centre at Ipswich Hospital.
Later this year will see pubs and restaurants from across the Greene King estate will get behind Macmillan’s flagship fundraising event World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, an event for which they have raised £342,000 over the past three years.
