Future of Lavenham Christmas Fair secured after villagers and businesses pledge support
The future of a popular annual Christmas fair in Lavenham has been secured, after villagers, businesses and organisations came together to pledge their support.
A rise in costs, combined with a lack of volunteers to run the three-day spectacle, had put this year’s event in jeopardy.
Health and safety requirements, plus financing additional traffic wardens and stewards, were cited as areas of concern.
Following an appeal, the community rallied around, with businesses and residents coming forward to offer donations and voluntary support.
The committee that organises the showpiece is delighted with the response, but has warned that a collective effort will be required to keep the event going in the future.
“The fair is not just confined to the Market Place, it’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved – all the shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels and holiday cottages,” said Lesley Thompson, from the organising committee.
“People don’t just come for the fair, they come to see Lavenham in all its festive glory.
“We would simply ask everyone to join in by adding some Christmas lights and window displays –spreading out the fair’s success to the High Street and Water Street – and opening late on the Friday night.
“This has been done in the past and was a great success in the High Street, in particular.
“We will do our utmost to ensure that this year’s fair is as successful than before, or more so.”
