Former Sudbury mayor Jack Owen was praised for his role in the community after handing out cheques to local charities.

During his year in the role Mr Owen held fundraising events including curry nights and quizzes to raise £5,680.52.

This was shared out between the Kernos Centre, Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group, The West Suffolk Branch of the National Autistic Society and the Benevolent Fund, Sudbury.

In thanking Mr Owen Chris Boatwright, clinical director and founder of the Kernos Centre, told the Free Press: “There are not many people that as much care as he does. He came to us on his own birthday.

“The support over the year that Mr Owen has given is truly valued by everyone at Kernos and by all the people that benefit from our service. These funds will help bridge the deficit in funding needed to meet the needs of young people in the Sudbury area.”

Mr Owen said: “These are charities I’ve always had a soft spot for.”
