Explosions and towering flames lit up the night sky in Hadleigh last night (Friday) after three tankers holding around 60,000 litres of petrol caught fire.

A total of 10 fire crews battled the blaze at UKay Fuel in Lady Lane, which was reported shortly before 6.45pm, for around three hours before it was brought under control.

Police advised residents to stay inside and close their windows and doors, closed the A1071 to traffic and cordoned off a 300-metre area surrounding the site as fire crews from Hadleigh, Sudbury and Ipswich fought to keep the flames from spreading to an 80,000-litre gas oil tanker nearby.

Nobody is believed to have been hurt in the incident. The cordon was removed and the A1071 reopened last night and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was monitoring the site this morning (Saturday).
