Exhibition on explorer

ANTARCTIC explorer Captain Lawrence Oates is the focus of an exhibition in Gestingthorpe this weekend.

Captain Oates, whose family home was Gestingthorpe Hall, selflessly surrendered his own life in Scott’s Antarctic Expedition in 1912, going out in a blizzard with the words: “I’m just going outside, I may be some time,” to relieve his group of the burden of his injuries.

The free exhibition, showing the village as he would have known it, will be displayed at the village hall from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday, with a collection made for Help For Heroes.

Talks by Lord Phillips and Ashley Cooper will take place from 7.30pm on Saturday in St Mary’s Church, with admission costing £4.
