Erivica Cakes in Hadleigh resumes trading after almost three months of closure due to coronavirus pandemic

A cake-making business has established an extensive range of cooking equipment at its Hadleigh store to help amateur bakers perfect their culinary skills.

Erivica Cakes reopened its High Street business last week, after being closed for almost three months during the coronavirus lockdown.

After noticing a spike in homebaking, business owner Terri Newman has decided to offer a range of cake-decorating tools and cooking equipment, which she hopes will help to increase the store’s footfall.

“We are having to adjust all the time to find ways to fill the void,” she said, adding that the team had been exploring the idea of developing its range of goods.

“It was something that we had been mulling over for a little while,” said Miss Newman.

Reflecting on the impact of the business’s closure during the lockdown, Miss Newman said it was crucial that customers felt enticed into a store.

“With high street premises, you need to have your doors open – it’s what encourages people to come in,” said the 47-year-old.

After continuing to receive requests for cake orders during the crisis, the business managed to establish a delivery service to meet the demand.

“It was important to us that we tried to fulfil the need, so we worked out a way to do it safely,” said Miss Newman.

While people were restricted on how they could mark their special occasions during the crisis, the business offered a range of novelty treats.

“A lot of people had plans that had to be cancelled, so they decided to have a cake instead,” said Miss Newman.

With weddings having to be cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic, the business has been busy rescheduling large cake orders.

During the lockdown, Miss Newman said she had been left humbled after a voluntary group arranged for a cake to be delivered to a different care home each week to express their gratitude to front-line staff.
