A Long Melford GP is urging people not to use hospital emergency and accident departments unnecessarily over the Christmas and new year period.

Dr Christopher Browning, from The Long Melford Practice in Church Street, is chairman of the NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group.

He said: “We have commissioned an advert to run during the busy winter period when there is extra pressure placed on the NHS and its staff.

“There are a number of options available to people including self-caring at home, calling NHS 111, visiting a local pharmacy or making an appointment with their GP surgery.

“People should only go to the emergency department in an emergency situation.”

The campaign encourages people to use the emergency department of their hospital appropriately and to consider the other health care options available to them.

The advert shows the possible consequences when an emergency department is used by patients for the treatment of minor injury and illness and highlights what could happen when hospital staff are treating minor health issues.
