Three decades ago, former professional cricket player Graham Gooch visited Nethergate Brewery in Clare, to help celebrate the launch of the Old Growler beer.

Last week, the Essex and England legend returned to the beer maker, which is now based at Rodbridge Corner in Long Melford, in honour of the brew’s 30th anniversary, and recreated the image of him pulling the first ever pint at Clare’s Bell Hotel.

Glen Painter, Nethergate Brewery’s commercial director, said: “We are proud of our beer and its accomplishments, so to celebrate and pay homage, we asked Graham Gooch to visit our brewery and tap room to pull a pint for us.

“What a good night. Graham Gooch is a true gent.”
