FIREFIGHTERS were called to a cafe in Halstead after a deep fat fryer caught fire.
Two crews from Halstead attended the fire at the High Street business shortly after 7am on Friday.
The blaze, which started in the kitchen, left the upstairs flat filled with smoke but was extinguished by 7.40am.
Station officer Peter Robinson said: “The owner of the cafe had turned on his deep fat fryer and then got on with other things.
“The fryer caught fire and this started a bigger fire in the extractor vent.
“Crews did an excellent job of quickly getting on top of the fire in the heavily smoke-logged building and the damage was mostly confined to smoke damage.”
