Council to rule on Tesco

A SUPERMARKET giant’s plans to build a new store in Hadleigh will be decided next week.

The planning application for a Tesco store would create around 200 jobs on the former Brett Works site.

It will go before Babergh District Council’s development committee on Wednesday.

The meeting at Hadleigh Town Hall is expected to be a feisty one as representations from Tesco and those in favour of the development are heard and campaigners against the proposals have their say.

Hands off Hadleigh, a protest group that has opposed the plans since 1998, says that if given the go-ahead the store will take business away from independent retailers in the town, increase traffic congestion and have a detrimental affect on the surrounding conservation area.

However, supporters of the development claim the store would improve the derelict site and provide a wider range of products for the town’s growing population.
