Change to homes bid sparks more concern

Concerns have been raised about the potential development of a former quarry site in Sudbury.

Residents in Bridge Terrace have voiced their fears over the safety of a privately-owned footbridge that crosses over to their properties.

It comes as fresh plans have been submitted to build two bungalows on the adjacent site.

In September 2015, Babergh District Council’s planning committee accepted revised plans for a four-bedroom house on the land.

Residents were delighted as conditions placed on the application meant access would have to come from Queen’s Close, instead of through the 150-year-old bridge and on to East Street using a narrow track.

Land owner Chris King had upset Bridge Terrace residents after it was claimed site clearance work damaged the bridge and a gas pipe, causing a power cut in the process/

The new application – for two two-bedroom bungalows – makes no mention of avoiding the bridge.

Residents had expressed concern over this, fearing it could allow for vehicles to access the properties from East Street along Bridge Terrace.

Sudbury Town Council’s planning committee also sought the inclusion of previous conditions when it recommended refusal of the plans at a meeting on Monday.

However, Lee French, the landowner’s agent at Medusa Design, said there were no plans to use this access.

“Access will be from Queen’s Close,” he said. “We didn’t even put it in [our application] as the previous application had it all blocked off. If Babergh want to add that in, that’s not a problem.”

Mr French explained the homes would be for Mr King and his wife Tracy’s respective parents.

Sudbury Town Council recommended refusal due to what it saw as over-development of the site, as well as the new development being closer to the Bridge Terrace cottages, which have no foundations.

Bridge Street resident Stéphane Chapotot said he and fellow residents felt the site would be overdeveloped if two homes were built.

“We have no foundations, so it has always been a concern to have buildings too close to us.

“It’s not that we don’t want development, but two houses is not acceptable.”

The plans will go before Babergh District Council in the coming months.
