Carnival time could be on its way to town

Funding and sponsorship is needed if plans to stage a Sudbury carnival are to become reality.

A committee has been set up to organise the event, which has been earmarked to take place next summer, with a procession beginning and ending at the Delphi Centre.

Jack Owen, committee chairman and Sudbury town councillor, said he had been approached by residents about the idea and the group was now looking for sponsorship and funding.

“We have sent letters to businesses to gauge the amount of support, because if we don’t get that, it will be very difficult,” he said.

“We are hoping to make it a really good occasion because we believe Sudbury is a great place.”

Although Mr Owen said the plans were at an early stage, he was keen to get schools, Scout groups and bands involved.

He added that a carnival dance could also be held in May to raise funds, while the possibility of a fair taking place on the same day as the main carnival, during the August bank holiday weekend, was being explored.
