After a wait of nearly 25 years, Sudbury once again has its very own carnival queen.

Darcie Crofton, 19, has been selected to represent the town in the role and will be supported by attendants Chloe Smith and Sophie Smith during the procession at this summer’s carnival.

Darcie was chosen during a carnival dance held at the Delphi Centre last month and will accompany Sudbury mayor Robert Spivey during the event on August 23.

Judges also picked Phoebe Lousie-Shepherd and Fern Swain as princesses.

The carnival is due to return for the first time since the 1980s after a committee, led by deputy mayor Jack Owen, was set up last year.

Mr Owen said around 100 people had attended the carnival dance, which featured music from Freddie Lay and Firty Quid.

“It was very difficult to choose the queen and the princesses and I wish all those who entered could have won,” said Mr Owen.

“We had some wonderful music during the dance and, as far as I know, everyone had a good time.”

The carnival procession, complete with floats, will make its way around the town’s streets, before finishing at the Delphi Centre.
