A long-running home hardware retailer in Holbeach is celebrating its first year under new management.

Hawkins Home Hardware became Tonwood Home Hardware in May last year, following the retirement of previous owner Andrew Hawkins, whose father, Len, opened the shop in 1953.

The business, based at the corner of Victoria Street and Chapel Street, passed to father-and-son team Steve and Matt Tonks.

Speaking to the Free Press last week, Steve said the past year has gone ‘very well’.

He said the business has been able to expand, with the shop now having longer opening hours and a wider range of stock. There are also plans to start trading on Sundays and allow for the business’ website to handle transactions.

Steve said the transition had been eased by the continued involvement of buying group Home Hardware, which helped the business hold onto to existing suppliers but also set up new ones.

One of the other reasons for the past year’s success, Steve said, was increased use of Home Hardware’s regular promotions, plus greater leafleting.

Holding on to the vast majority of the previous staff also helped, he said.

Steve said the business was ‘particularly grateful for all the customer support’, existing and new.
