Efforts to redevelop the area round Sudbury’s bus station have moved a step forward after the sale of a key building was completed.

Babergh District Council has now finalised a deal to buy Navigation House in Great Eastern Road.

The building, which is occupied by Seekars Garage, Netta’s Dry Cleaners and Sirens dress shop, is thought to have been bought by the council for around £290,000.

The authority had been keen to secure the building to allow it to press ahead with the long-awaited redevelopment of the bus station.

Nigel Bennett, town and district councillor, told members of Sudbury Town Council on Tuesday that the sale was a positive sign.

“Progress continues to be made on the Hamilton Road development,” he said. “This is a step forward in the regeneration.”

Proposals for the site include the creation of a small cinema and discussions are ongoing between potential developers and the district council.
