Bridge Project in Sudbury benefits from £1,000 donation by Belchamp Morris dancing troupe

A morris dancing troupe is keen to continue supporting charities in Sudbury, after raising £1,000 for the benefit of a social enterprise.

Members of the Belchamp Morris group gathered on Market Hill on Saturday to hand over a cheque to representatives of The Bridge Project, before performing at various local pubs alongside Norwich-based Morris organisation Kitwitches.

The money was raised from a traditional kaley barn dance event last year, as well as proceeds from the sales of metal and leather badges.

Derek Stokes, from the Belchamp Morris troupe, said the fundraising total was a surprise, having collected £400 a year earlier for Prostate Cancer UK.

“We are really pleased with that amount,” he told the Free Press. “We chose to support a Sudbury charity because, even though we are based in Belchamp, this is effectively our home town.”
