A boy accidentally shot a young girl in the head with an air rifle on Boxing Day.

Police say they were called at 12.15pm on Saturday December 26 to reports a young girl had been shot in the head by a boy with an air rifle at an address near Stowmarket.

The girl, who is thought to be nine years old, was taken to West Suffolk Hospital by her parents and later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further checks.

It is understood the bullet did not penetrate her skull but did have to be removed from her head by doctors.

A police spokeswoman said the girl’s injuries were not thought to have been life-threatening.

The boy, who is believed to be 12 years old, will not face prosecution as police are satisfied the incident was an accident.

The gun is not thought to have belonged to him.

The police spokeswoman said: “Officers attended and spoke to the parents of both children involved and it is believed to have been an accident.”
