Sixth form students at Ormiston Sudbury Academy have been offered the chance for an all-expenses paid trip to BBC Broadcasting House.

The offer was made by BBC presenter Martha Kearney, who was at the Tudor Road academy on Friday (29/1/2016) to deliver an inspirational talk to the academy’s sixth form students about her career in journalism, and the opportunities afforded by a university education.

Ms Kearney, who presents BBC Radio Four’s World at One, Women’s Hour and BBC2’s Newsnight asked to hear journalistic recordings of two minutes long from the students on anything they find interesting, and from these she will select one student to travel for free to London to watch her broadcast to the world.

“It’s wonderful to get into schools and to see young people,” said Ms Kearney who has a cottage in Suffolk. “I hope I’ve been able to inspire them and to broaden their horizons a little.”

Student Darrell Barnard-Jones said: “This was a wonderful and inspirational talk that I think taught us all something. It’s great as it helps us to see that there is a wider world out there that we should experience.”

Friday’s talk was part of a programme of events at Ormiston Sudbury Academy to raise the aspiration of Sixth Form Students.

Principal Caroline Wilson said: “We work tirelessly to encourage our students to reach higher and further than they thought possible. Having Martha in to speak with the students was just part of the package that we have to deliver the best sixth form education in the region.”

Ormiston Sudbury Academy was rated as ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted during their last inspection. For more information about sixth form provision at the academy visit http://www.ormistonsudburyacademy.co.uk/post-16/
