A company specialising in baby care products has been named the world class manufacturer of the year at a national awards ceremony.

Philips Avent picked up the prize at the Manufacturer of the Year Awards, run by The Manufacturer magazine in Birmingham, in front of 1,000 guests.

The company, which employs 500 people at its factory in Glemsford, specialises in baby feeding bottles and other babycare products, with 80 per cent of its produce made in Glemsford.

A spokesman for the company said: “We are very pleased to have been chosen for this award. Our focus is on ensuring that everything we do improves the health and happiness of mum and baby. This award recognises that continued focus.”

He said the company’s response to the needs of parents alongside “unrivalled quality” had given it the edge and led to its award-winning success.

Particular praise was given to the employees at the factory, which first opened in 1984.

The spokesman said: “We are a major employer in the area and feel very proud that we manufacture such high-quality products right here in Glemsford.

“This award recognises the hard work of all of the people that work for us, as well as their continued dedication.”
