Award-winning group needs help
An award-winning organisation set up to look after a former church has said it is desperate for more help from the community.
Roger Green, chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s, was recently named the South East Volunteer of the Year by the Marsh Christian Trust for his work in helping to preserve the former church in the heart of Sudbury as a community building.
Despite the building being extremely popular, with bookings often taken two or three years in advance, Friends group member Peter Gray said they are desperate for new blood.
“We are conscious that the management committee is ageing,” he said.
The group is launching a new scheme, particularly aimed at those people unable to physically volunteer, but keen to show their support.
For £20 per individual or £30 per couple, you can become a member of the Friends group, receiving a number of benefits.
As well being given an exclusive metal pin badge to symbolise support, members will be given a guided tour around the building and have the opportunity to vote at the annual meeting.
It is hoped that if there is significant interest, the group will hold regular gatherings for members and put on special performances.
Members will also receive discounted rates for any events put on at St Peter’s by the group.
Mr Gray said: “It’s such a popular institution in the town so I’m sure people want to actively support it.”
He added that the group was always keen to find new volunteers to help out at the building.
