An ‘unsung hero’ who plays a key role in making sure West Suffolk Hospital runs smoothly has been named as porter of the year.

Peter Howe, of Whepstead, was voted as the winner of the annual contest by his fellow porters.

The 60-year-old works across the hospital as a general porter, fulfilling duties such as transporting patients, delivering food trolleys and collecting waste. He has spent around 25 years at West Suffolk.

Darren Cooksey, portering manager at the hospital, said: “Peter is one of the unsung heroes of West Suffolk, and makes an enormous contribution to the way the hospital runs. His hard work is appreciated by both patients and his colleagues, and we are delighted that we have been able to thank him publicly for his efforts and the compassion and dedication he shows to his role.”

The award is in memory of former porter Michael Williams.
