In his first official role as mayor of Sudbury Jack Owen was given the honour of handing out vouchers to 39 residents for food or clothing in a tradition going back more than 350 years.

The £25 vouchers were given at a ceremony at St Peter’s on Thursday.

Geoffrey Challacombe, chairman of the Sudbury Municipal Charities, said he was not aware on any other town that has an Ascension Day tradition of this kind. “It is wonderful that the people of Sudbury continue to take part,” he said.
