A school that bears the name of one of Suffolk’s most famous sons is celebrating after 189 students passed a prestigious arts award.
The artistic prowess of Year 8 students at Thomas Gainsborough School has come to the fore after they completed the bronze level Artsmark award.
Edward Clark, head of art and design, was delighted with the students achieving the qualification, run similar to the Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
Mr Clark said: “This is our second year awarding this qualification, to have 189 members of Year 8 successfully pass the bronze level is a massive achievement.”
The school is currently working closely with Gainsborough’s House in Sudbury to connect students with the life and work of the renowned artist.
Mr Clark explained: “We are currently hosting some work from the house’s collection in school, which demonstrates to the students the way that other artists have imitated or responded to the work of Thomas Gainsborough.
“We also ran a series of workshops for students in Year 8 where students worked with members of staff from Gainsborough House to learn about Thomas Gainsborough and create responses to his work.”
