Diana and James Donoghue are keeping their asparagus tips crossed that their country pub and restaurant gets picked for a number of awards next month.
Having been selected as finalists for best chef, best pub, best restaurant and best Sunday lunch in a magazine competition, the couple, who run The Pheasant at Gestingthorpe, are waiting to hear if they have been successful.
Diana, who worked as an events manager before taking over the pub six years ago, said: “We were thrilled to gain an entry into The Good Food Guide 2013.
“It is a great achievement to be included in the guide and this is putting us on the map.
“Now we have heard that we are finalists in four categories in the Essex fine food and drinks awards.”
The couple, who met while working in hotels in London, have added accommodation to the pub and have bought a one-acre plot of land to grow fruit and vegetables for use in the restaurant.
“We like to grow our own or use locally-sourced food,” said Diana. “We have our own hens as well and our guests say they can really taste the difference.”
