Rugby fan Alex Holmes is hoping a public vote may earn him the chance to raise money for the Royal British Legion by pushing a wartime Jeep the length of the D-Day landings.

Alex, from Thorpe Morieux, first came up with the idea in 2010, but the logistics of it made it unworkable without back up.

Instead, he walked from Omaha Beach, where the Americans landed about 60 miles east to Pegasus Bridge, where British Paratroops landed, carrying a 70lb backpack, which was what a 1944 soldier carried.

Alex, 40, who coaches a youth team at Bury Rugby Club where his sons Bernie, aged eight, and George, seven, play, has done his Overlord Challenge, named after D-Day’s codename, three times since then, but the 1.1 tonne Jeep push remained a dream.

So when IG the global leader in online trading, decided to celebrate it’s third year as a main sponsor for the Harlequins rugby club by asking fans what extraordinary achievement they wanted to complete, he put forward his plan and is now one of three finalists the public can vote for.

The Felixstowe docks worker, who has raisedabout £6,000 for the legion, said: “I’ve always wanted to push a Jeep the same distance, with help from a team of professional rugby players.”

He is not ex-military but said: “I read a lot about the campaigns in World War 2, particularly D-Day, and what got me was how young some of the soldiers were.”

The other two finalists are blind marathon runner Simon Wheatcroft who wants to do the 4 Deserts Namibia race and Peter Gore who hopes to start a women’s team at Bolton RUFC.

You can vote online at www.igachievetheextraordinary.com unti one minute to midnight on December 28. The winner will be announced at the Harlequins v Saracens game on January 9.

Alex says if he does not win he will still do his Overlord Challenge next June with his backpack.
