To mark its 175th anniversary, St John’s Church in Bury St Edmunds is holding a series of concerts by artists from around the world.

The programme at the church in St John’s Street starts on 7.45pm on Saturday, March 11 with an evening of virtuoso kora and bass viola music with Gambian artist Sefo Kanuteh and Israeli classical musician Layil Barr.

The concerts, all taking place at St.John’s Church, St. John’s Street, Bury St. Edmunds, will also feature music from South America with acclaimed Colombian guitarist and singer Camillo Menjura and Harp player Diego Laverde Rojas.

An Indian sitar and tabla recital with Mehboob Nadeem and Hanif Khan will be presented in association with the Bury Festival.

The final concert in June will present a special concert by Palestinian singer, broadcaster and writer Reem Kelani, who will be accompanied by top jazz pianist Bruno Heinen.

St John’s Church spokesperson Sue Szymanski said: “We wanted to present something special to mark our 175th anniversary year and invited world music specialist Gary Newland to help create a programme for us.

“What he has organised for us goes way beyond our expectations. These artists are truly world class and to present them within the fabulous acoustics of the church will be amazing and very special for everyone who attends.”

Gary Newland, who also works for Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festival and is founder of the Suffolk world music event DRUM CAMP, said: “This is a lovely opportunity for the people of Bury to experience some of the world’s finest musicians and singers, in what is a beautiful and intimate setting.
