OPeraUpClose returns to the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds on February 23 and 24 for a third year, this time with their new English version of Bizet’s wildly popular opera, Carmen.

Carmen (played by Flora McIntosh) captivates and provokes, disturbing the composure of everyone she encounters and when she meets Jose (Anthony Flaum) sparks fly.

But as her passion cools, his turns to obsession.

Carmen is set in a torrid South American landscape of dust and concrete, where small-town boredom and machismo can turn nasty.

Bizet’s powerful melodies are orchestrated for a quartet of strings, woodwind and percussion by composer Harry Blake (OperaUpClose’s La Traviata and Don Giovanni).
