Sitting in the mastermind chair facing a string of testing questions does not hold any fears for Emily Mowles.

The Year 7 student from Thomas Gainsborough School in Great Cornard has just won the western area finals of Suffolk Book Mastermind.

Pupils from 32 schools take part in the competition, answering 20 questions on a book of their choice and general knowledge.

Emily, 12, scored 17 out of 20 on the book Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and seven in the general knowledge round, at the school in Head Lane last Monday.

“She knew her book so well, as she had read it several times and that allowed her to excel,” said Heather Welch, manager at Great Cornard Library.

Emily will now go through to the county finals, where she will go up against seven others, at the Riverside Centre in Stratford St Andrew on March 28.

Her selected book will be Eclipse, also by Stephanie Meyer.

“The competition promotes reading and enjoyment,” said Mrs Welch.

“The pupils like taking part and we are all really proud of Emily.”
