Music lovers were treated to a day of live performances at St Peter’s in Sudbury on Saturday as part of Compact Music’s Record Store Day.

Performers included local favourite Ady Johnson, Robbie Gladwell – guitarist with Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel – and headline act Fiona Bevan, who co-wrote the UK number one Little Things for One Direction with global star Ed Sheeran.

There were also young acts just starting out and local performers showcasing the wide talent the area has to offer.

One surprise star was Thomas Gainsborough School student Rhys Butterworth-Bowman, 14, who was given a last-minute chance to perform.

“I just came to watch Fiona and someone offered me a slot,” said Rhys. “I had to borrow a guitar.”

Ady Johnson said that the event was terrific for the industry, which he said is facing a difficult period.

“If independent stores can show people what they have to offer, it can only be helpful to the industry and themselves,” he said.

“It is nice to be a part of it – we are all part of the same machine.”

The day started with a record sale at the store in North Street, with people queuing from 6am to get their hands on their favourite vinyl.
