A week ago news reached us that a number of dolphins had somehow managed to leave the relative safety of the sea and taken a diversion up a river off the Cornwall coast.
No one is entirely sure why or what made them do it, but sadly, as a result, some of them died.
It seems some were redirected and sent back to safety.
How easy it is in life to be swimming comfortably along with everybody else when out of nowhere appears a path that we hadn't planned to take.
Sometimes it can be just a circumstance, wrong advice, a headstrong action or even just the desire to get away from the crowd that pushes us in a different direction.
Occasionally it is okay to take a different route, providing we have a purpose and rejoin the main road quickly. But often the unplanned diversion leads to despair, loneliness and destruction.
People around us ask inevitable questions – how on earth did that happen? What were they doing? Why?
When it happens and it probably will at sometime in our lives, remember the words from the Old Testament. Give your life to God, trust him, and he will direct your path.
