A CHILL wind blows across our world today. A sense of despair and hopelessness grips the hearts of millions. Something has happened in recent months all over the globe that has shaken the very foundations of stability.
Bankers, politicians and business leaders are in daily contact to halt the slide towards recession and depression.

In the light of all that happening, and what could well be on the horizon, we do well to ask ourselves some very searching questions
. What kind of foundation am I building my life upon? What would I do if some kind of political or financial tsunami turned my life upside down?

God himself has spoken of a time of great shaking and upheaval to hit planet Earth in the last times. Jesus himself used the metaphor of winds and floods that suddenly arise and overwhelm those who have not built their lives on the rock of God's commandments.

None of us can accurately predict when and where disaster will strike or for how long it will stay with us, but we can prepare our hearts and minds to face uncertain days. Christian people have for generations taken great comfort from the little saying: "We do not know what the future holds, but we do know the one who holds the future."

God has promised to be for us in the here and now, and later in the then and there, a rock of refuge, a tower of strength, and a fortress of safety. This is how the Psalmist put it.

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the Earth should change, though the mountains should shake in the heart of the sea." Psalm 46 v1.

May we all experience the peace that comes from believing this.
