Young captain proud to lead Suds

TEENAGER Tom Summers has revealed his surprise and pride at being handed the Sudbury captaincy in his first full season of senior rugby.

The 19-year-old fly-half believes his side have turned a corner after their first win of the season on Saturday, a 31-27 home victory over Wanstead, and cannot wait to lead them out at East London on Saturday (3pm).

“When I got called up for captain it was a bit unbelievable,” he said. “I know it is like a starter captain here but it is unbelievable and a great honour.

“I have mixed feelings (about it) at the minute because being a 10 as well it is a lot of pressure but everytime I walk out on the pitch I am honoured to do it and being 19 I am a bit scared but I will get there.”

Summers added having experienced pros like Mark Bolton, the club’s former coach, and vice-captain Richard Lorking, alongside is a great helping as he adjusts to the new role.

And the Ferrari technician, who has progressed through the club’s youth system since the under-13s, is confident they are now getting to grips with how new coach Graham Richards wants them to play.

“We have had a hard couple of games that we have lost them but it has been about learning the new match plan with Graham,” he said. “I think Saturday was our game and the one where we are going to change it and now we’re looking to go onwards and upwards.”

Bolton (holiday) will miss Saturday but the club are set to recall Fraser Beckett from university to sort out their fullback problem with Nick Robinson awaiting surgery on his shoulder in December, though he has not been ruled out from playing until then.

Prop Josh Brown is available again while Ethan Wright has left for university and Andrew Currie (shoulder) will face a late fitness test.

n HADLEIGH are up to fourth in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One after a 15-8 home win over Southwold last Saturday and travel to Harwich and Dovercourt on Saturday, a side who have won one and lost two of their opening three games.
