Suds suffer semi-final heartbreak in the Plate

SUFFOLK RFU PLATE

SEMI-FINAL

Southwold 17 Sudbury 13

For their last game of 2012 Sudbury took a trip to the coast on Saturday for the Suffolk Plate.

Horizontal rain and cold winds were the order of the day and the Sudbury performance for 70 minutes of the match was just as bleak.

The visitors found handling difficult in the wet conditions, but it was they who scored first after half an hour of play when Tom Summers slotted over a penalty kick when the home side were caught offside.

Southwold finished the half with a try after a period of pressure in the Sudbury 22, driving their forwards on with the pick and drive to give a half time score of 5-3.

Sudbury struggled to get any momentum and the Southwold forwards kept the play at close range and scored a try from a lineout in the 22 when they drove over from short range with only two and a half minutes on the clock.

Another try from a lineout and drive deepened the despair and most of the second half was a struggle for possession played out in the centre of the park.

Then, with 10 minutes left, things seemed to click.

From a scrum, Tom Murray scampered over and from this point on it was all Sudbury.

Southwold failed to kick the required 10 metres on the restart and from the scrum, quick ball to the wing saw Sudbury cross the line again, but the last pass was adjudged forward.

From the scrum, Murray pounced on the loose ball to score.

Sudbury attacked again from the restart and were again on the Southwold line with a scrum when the referee called a halt to the proceedings to give the home side a narrow victory.
