Rugby club not worried about relegation threat
SUDBURY Rugby Club are still not prepared to declare themselves in a relegation battle, despite the club having sunk to just 10 points from the two bottom sides.
First-team manager Michael Mather watched his side go three games into 2012 without tasting a victory on Saturday, albeit against league leaders Holt (31-21), but said the club need not look over their shoulders yet.
“I think, personally, I am not too bothered (about relegation). I think we will survive and hopefully in mid-table as well.
“Realistically, we are going to take one game at a time and not worry about it.”
Suds fans will be shifting a little uncomfortably though after seeing Newmarket winning on the results sheet on Saturday, meaning the Suffolk side who comfortably beat them are now closing the gap.
East London are the other side currently in the bottom two, with Sudbury, two places above, having to play them at Whittome Field in what could be a crunch game at the end of March.
But Maher believes mid-table is the most likely destination for his side, who have suffered after being hit by a succession of injuries to key players.
“At the beginning of the season we would be foolish to say we would be happy with coming mid-table or anything like that,” he said. “We always have to strive to be the best and put that belief and attitude into the boys as well and have ambition and belief we can compete in this league.
“Obviously, with injuries we have not been able to sustain any run of form but having said that the guys that have stood who wouldn’t normally play have shown their mettle.”
Of Saturday’s game, having conceded four tries in the opening stages of the game, Maher said his side had not turned up quick enough but was delighted with their second half showing.
