Weight lifting: Wilkinson targets senior world title

A JUNIOR world record power lifter holder has the senior world championship title in his sights after an encouraging performance in an experienced strongman competition.

Steve Wilkinson, 25, of Sudbury, finished 15th out of 24 in only his second ever try in a strongman event - the Natural British Open Strongman championship, which was fought out alongside seasoned world strongman competitiors.

Amongst the gruelling events he had to get test himself in at The Paradise Wildlife Park in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire at the weekend, were a 300kg tyre flip, a truck pull and a farmers walk for 25 metres carrying 200kg.

The personal trainer, who has taken a year out of power lifiting after his age has tipped him into the senior category, now feels he is ready to foucs his attention back on his number one event at the top standard.

"I am hoping next to win the worlds," he said.

"This was only my second strongman competition and there were some guys down there who do the world's strongest man."

Wilkinson is the current world record holder for junior dead lifting, which he had to stop competing in at the age of 24. The british and world's power lifting events get under way next spring and autumn respectively.
