Weekend sport: Another defeat for Diss RFC

PHIL Sharpe’s Diss lost for the third successive game on Saturday, going down 13-5 at Old Colfeians.

An 11 point gap has now opened up from Diss in fifth to rivals Bury St Edmunds in fourth after the losing run, two of which have come against sides at the top of the table - Thurrock (10-3) and Letchworth Garden City (49-15).

In the Ridgeons League it was also a disappointing day for Debenham LC, with the Hornets’ promotion ambitions in the First Division stung by a 2-0 defeat at 9th placed Fakenham Town.

But Dale Vince’s side will be looking to bounce back in their First Division knock-out cup quarter finals, when they host table-toppers Godmanchester Rovers at Maitlands on Tuesday, Feburary 21.

Diss Town were not in action at the weekend but have dropped to just a point above the relegation zone, with Wivenhoe Town’s excellent run of form continuing, ahead of a clash with Dereham Town at Brewers Green Lane on Saturday.

In the FA Cup Norwich City missed out on the chance to reach the quarter finals at home to Leicester City of the Championship, with a Dave Nugent strike sealing a 2-1 win for the Foxes after Wes Hoolahan had put the Canaries ahead.

Ipswich Town made it four straight victories at home to promotion-chasing Cardiff City, with Lee Martin hitting a brace and Michael Chopra firing home from close range against his former club.
