Weekend sport: AFC back to winning ways while Suds lose again

AFC Sudbury’s pursuit of a play-off place got back on track on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Chatham Town.

James Baker’s 19th of the season and strikes from skipper Sam Clarke and Dave Wareham saw the Yellows to victory, their second in six games.

The result from AFC’s first game in 19 days, due to the cold snap, leaves them still two points adrift of 5th place in Ryman League Division One North.

In the Ridgeons League, Cornard United’s Friday night fixture with Brightlingsea Regent drew a crowd of 72, twice as good as their average gates. Chris Symes’ side lost the game 4-2 though, leavign them still bottom of the First Division table.

Long Melford suffered a 2-0 defeat at Ipswich Wanderers while in the Premier Division Hadleigh United lost 3-1 at home to Stanway Rovers.

In the FA Cup Norwich City missed out on the chance to reach the quarter finals at home to Leicester City of the Championship, with a Dave Nugent strike sealing a 2-1 win for the Foxes after Wes Hoolahan had put the Canaries ahead.

Ipswich Town made it four straight victories at home to promotion-chasing Cardiff City, with Lee Martin hitting a brace and Michael Chopra firing home from close range against his former club.

In the rugby Sudbury lost 20-6 at Upminster to leave them precariously perched just eight points above the bottom two in London 3NE.
