Weekend sports round-up: Big freeze wipes out local fixtures

SEMI-PROFESSIONAL sport was wiped out across the area due to frozen pitches on Saturday, though Norwich City and Ipswich Town both enjoyed good wins over Bolton and Coventry.

AFC Sudbury’s home game with bottom side Ware was one of a number to have failed an early morning pitch inspection, with games at Halstead (v Cornard United) and Long Melford (v Downham Town) also postponed.

Hadleigh United were already due a break at the weekend but are due to play FC Clacton away on Tuesday (7.45pm), weather permitting — see this website for the latest on that game on Tuesday lunchtime.

Sudbury Rugby Club’s home game with Wymondham was also off while all the hockey also fell victim to the big freeze at Great Cornard Upper School.

Norwich City and Ipswich Town were able to play on Saturday, with the Canaries beating Bolton at Carrow Road 2-0 in the Premier League, with goals from Anthony Pilkington and Andrew Surman to leave them ninth.

Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys’ recent upturn in fortunes continued at basement side Coventry as they scored an extra-time winner through Michael Chopra to win 3-2.

The Blues had taken the lead through Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ defelcted effort early on before ex-Norwich player Sammy Clingan equalised from the penalty spot after Ibrahima Sonko handled in the box.

The Sky Blues then took the lead through Gary Deegan but Chopra headed in a saved Lee Martin penalty to peg them back before the striker headed in a winner five minutes into stoppage time.
