Weekend sports round-up: AFC blow chance to get back in top five

AFC Sudbury fans were left stunned on Saturday as their side squandered a host of chances while opponents Waltham Forest scored two from four efforts at goal all game to win 2-1.

The result leaves Chris Tracey’s men still in eighth position in Ryman One North and three points off the play-off spots after results elsewhere had largely gone their way.

A James Baker header had given the Yellows the lead their domination deserved but a quick second-half equaliser from the visitors was followed up with what proved to be the winner.

Forest, 16th before the start of the day, done the double over AFC last season and have proved to be their bogey team yet again after of hosting bottom side Ware at The MEL Group Stadium on Saturday (3pm).

In the Ridgeons League, Hadleigh United drew 0-0 at Walsham-le-Willows, while in the First Division there were defeats for Long Melford (4-3 at Swaffham Town) and Halstead Town (2-1 at Whitton United). Stowmarket Town’s 1-1 draw at home to March Town United means Cornard United, not in action on Saturday, sunk to the bottom of the table, with Stowmarket holding three games in hand on Chris Symes’ team.

In the FA Cup Norwich City will play Leicester City at Carrow Road in the last 16 of the FA Cup after beating West Brom 2-1 with Simeon Jackson scoring the winner.

Ipswich Town were not in action at the weekend, but host Championship league leaders West Ham United at Portman Road on Tuesday (January 31, 7.45pm).

In the rugby Sudbury lost 31-21 to league leaders Holt, with four quick tries given away in the first half costing Sudbury dear, although they did score more points than their high-flying opponents in the second half.
