Weather wins again in blank sporting weekend
THE big freeze struck again at the weekend with all local fixtures called off while Ipswich Town’s home game with Middlesbrough caused anger among fans after it was abandoned after 38 minutes.
Norwich City’s Premier League match at Swansea City did finish, however, with the Canaries winning a five-goal thriller 3-2.
Paul Lambert’s men came from 1-0 down in south Wales at half-time to win via a brace from Grant Holt and an Anthony Pilkington deflected shot.
Ipswich Town fans were left leaving Portman Road before half-time with a message from chief executive Simon Clegg telling them they face having to pay half of the ticket price again for the re-arranged fixture under clear club guidance with matches that have already started when abandoned.
The harsh frost overnight on Friday got the better of pitches at; Waltham Abbey, where AFC Sudbury were due to play, Hadleigh United (V Ely City), Godmanchester Rovers, where Cornard United were due to play, Halstead Town (V Debenham LC) and Long Melford (V Stowmarket Town), Sudbury Rugby Club and Great Cornard Sports Centre, where Sudbury Hockey Club play.
But with the mercury set to rise significantly this week, players, managers and fans will be hoping to finally see some local sporting action next weekend, with Cornard United hoping to draw a bumper crowd for their Friday night fixture at Blackhouse Lane with Brightlingsea Regent (7.45pm).
