Swimming: Stunning swim sets Karl on way to unassailable lead
Hadleigh Hare, Karl Purdy, fulfilled his potential at the Fritton Lake Standard Distance Triathlon. and there may be more to come. The race was based around Fritton Lake near Beccles, and comprised a 1500m lake swim, 40km ride through the undulating local countryside and villages and an arduous 10km cross country run around the lake itself.
For a small club, the Hadleigh Hares were well represented, providing 12 triathletes in a field of 127 competitors. Despite an ominous forecast and dark clouds the race conditions were dry and not too windy.
Karl Purdy began the race with a stunning swim of 22:42, followed by a lightning-fast transition and then an excellent bike leg of 1:04:21, which gave him an unassailable lead over the other Hares.
Another fast bike to run transition, followed by an amazing run time of 37:42 for a cross country 10k, gave Purdy ninth position overall in a time of 2:05:55, just four minutes off the overall winner.
An ever-improving Tim Bowman was the second Hare home in 26th place in a time of 2:20:43, followed by John Chisnall in 32nd place in 2:22:02. Richard Hanley, Martin Alabone, David Dulake and Nick Rush performed well, with both Hanley and Alabone setting personal bests for the distance, 2:26:08 and 2:36:44 respectively. Dulake, in his first outing at this distance, finished in a very respectable time of 2:41:10.
The other Hares had a mixed day. Jonas Grist, suffering from a lack of recent training, was happy to complete the race in a time of 2:51:37. Doug Grimwade, Steve Bowen and Marianne Aitken did not perform to their best.
Grimwade was unfortunate to puncture 5km into the bike leg. After fixing it he attempted to catch as many Hares as he could and eventually finished in a time of 2:29:49.
Bowen missed a turning on the run which added an extra 2km to his run leg. This setback, combined with a nasty fall and the loss of a trainer in a bog, pulled him down to an overall time of 2:41:25.
Marianne Aitken entered the race suffering from a bad cold and paid the price. After an excellent swim and bike leg she faded on the run, tumbled into a field of nettles, and finished in an overall time of 2:53:15.
