Sudbury cut fighting Forest down to size

EAST WOMEN’S LEAGUE: Waltham Forest 1 Sudbury 3

EAST WOMEN’S LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

Waltham Forest 1 Sudbury 3

SUDBURY’S first visit to London this season could hardly have got off to a better start with a brace from Cottrell and a goal from Casey Humphreys sealing the victory.

Under a bright sun at the Waltham Academy ground a confident Sudbury side won an early penalty corner three minutes in which was converted by Cottrell, hitting the ball as sweetly as she will all season.

The visitors continued to dominate with the majority of the play in the Waltham half but despite winning a series of penalty corners, they were unable to add to their tally until a flowing move culminated in Casey Humphreys swooping low in front of goal to place a beautifully-angled, raised deflection over the advancing keeper.

The second half saw Waltham take to the pitch clearly determined to defend their home turf.

They started brightly, forcing Sudbury on to the defensive with Lizzie Anderson in the Sudbury goal in fine form, saving numerous shots until finally Waltham forced the ball over the line in remarkable and contentious circumstances.

A tight goalmouth scramble saw the ball ricocheting around with defenders and attackers getting touches before the ball hit a Waltham attacker’s foot.

She then struck the ball into the goal above Sudbury’s howls of protest. Afterwards the umpire said he had seen the foot but decided no advantage had accrued to the attacking side.

A few tense minutes ensued as Waltham tried to work their way back into the game but in truth Sudbury were the better side with the midfield of Sloan, Caddock, captain Ami Humphreys and player-of-the-match Gemma Jones just too committed and too skilful for the game to ever be in doubt.

When Cottrell scored her second and Sudbury’s third, the points were safely in the bag and Sudbury could look forward to the long drive home, tired but content.
