Rowing: Off-colour in sculls

Sudbury RC competed in the Peterborough Spring Regatta on Saturday. This 1000m regatta on the purpose-built course alongside the river Nene is one of the premier regional regattas and more than 440 boats raced in various events.

In the Intermediate 1 Double Sculls, Sam Hogsbjerg and Trevor Chambers were slightly off colour and their usual fast start saw them only keeping up rather than setting the early pace. Northampton and the Ardingly A crew drew out a lead and the Sudbury crew were unable to pull them back, finishing third. This was the faster of the two heats; their time would have meant progress from the other.

Rachel Drayson had steering issues in her heat of Intermediate 3 Single Sculls, and missed out on direct qualification for the final. In the repecharge, she adopted a more cautious approach to ensure a smooth course, but this resulted in losing a bit of power and being narrowly edged out.

In the Intermediate 1 Single Sculls Paul Hamblett, sculling in the open-weight category in a straight final, rowed a strong race and looked good, but ultimately the headwind worked against him and he came second to Walton of Leicester.

Hamblett, Hogsbjerg and Chambers joined up with Kolimechkov of Putney Town to contest the Intermediate 1 Quad Sculls, one of the quickest events at the regatta.

Despite having minimal time together as a crew, they were competitive from the start and led for the first 400m or so.

Thereafter the superior togetherness of the Nottingham crew in the lane next to them began to tell, and they pulled in front.

These two crews fought out the finish with Nottingham emerging victors by a length, both well clear of Leys School.

Immediately following this race Hamblett rushed back to the start for the final of the Elite Single Sculls, where he again came second, perhaps suffering from the minimal recovery time between races.

Hogsbjerg similarly had little rest, having been asked by Lea RC (where former Sudbury member Dave Bull is rowing) to sub in to their Intermediate 2 eight. In a very close race they scraped home first by a third of a length.

Susie Moule, in her first race for some time, had a strong start in the Womens Intermediate 1 Single Sculls, but found the headwind a challenge and faded in the second half.

Wrapping up a busy day, Hamblett and Kolimechkov won the Elite Double Sculls.
