Martial arts: Karen's tops in Scotland
SUDBURY'S Kuk Sool Won school are enjoying a double celebration. Chief instructor Karen Smith has won the Scottish national tournament, and a haul of 11 gold medals at a European tournament at King's Lynn.
Karen was making her debut in the national event, at Meadowbank Stadium, and came out on top after an all-day competition in a range of disciplines.
"I competed in sword, short staff, sparring, empty hands form, and two categories of self-defence," said Karen.
"Three judges score each contest, and I ended the day with the most points to become 2nd Dahn Scottish Grand Champion."
The event was attended by hundreds of competitors, and the Grand Master of Kuk Sool, Kuk Sa Nim, as well as several high-ranking Masters from all over the world.
The presentations, in the evening, were attended by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, George Grubb, accompanied by pipes and drums.
"This was the first time I had competed in the Scottish event. I have won a Grand Champion tournament in Spain, but it was nice to go home and win," she said.
Karen, who was born in Scotland, combined the tournament with a visit to friends and relations.
Eighteen club members competed in the European tournament at King's Lynn, picking up 38 medals in total.
"To win 11 golds is a terrific achievement," said Karen. "I am really pleased for the students, who are talented and dedicated."
